BIOGRAPHY:
Rootbeer came from a hoarding situation involving both cats and dogs. Despite having previously been in a home with several cats and dogs, we believe that Rootbeer would do best as an only pet. Rootbeer was born without 1 eye and the other one is deformed with limited-to-no vision. The existing eye has been thoroughly examined by the vet and does not cause any apparent discomfort. It is not recommended to be removed at this time but should be monitored. We aren’t 100% sure of his breed, but our best guess is a Dachshund and Pomeranian Mix. He has a gorgeous long-haired brindle coat.
Because Rootbeer came from a hoarding situation, his housetraining is a work-in-progress. He was recently neutered, which should help with “marking” indoors. He will need a diligent and patient owner to continue to work with him on house training. Based on observations and his impaired vision, it appears that Rootbeer may have been bullied from getting to feed in his previous living situation. He arrived to rescue with a scar on his nose/face, a very thin stature, and discomfort with anything being around his food.
Because Rootbeer cannot see, he cannot tell who he is around when he is eating and tends to start snapping around himself, whether that be to the air, other dogs, or humans. Rootbeer can also be possessive of anything that is “his”, for fear of it being stolen and no apparent way to protect himself. As he settles into a home and is feeling less threatened, this behavior may subside. However, due to his discomfort and resource guarding, he is not a good candidate for a home with children or cats.
Rootbeer could live happily with another dog, so long as proper introductions are initiated, and the family is patient as he learns to trust his surroundings. Rootbeer’s foster pawrent says that despite being vision-impaired, he is very loving and considerably hilarious. He is independent, confident, loves to play and be petted, and gives endless cuddles and kisses. Rootbeer quickly mapped out the layout of his foster home and yard and navigates through the home with no issues.
He will ONLY be considered to families with a FENCED-IN YARD.
